Korea ranked top in the Fifth International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) which was held in Modena, Italy on September 5, with three gold medals and one silver medal.
IESO, an international competition of students under 18 years old, was first held in Daegu, Korea in 2007. Korea won the 2nd IESO in Manila, Philippines in 2008.
At this year’s event, Yu Sang-wu from Chungbuk Science High School received the Best Student Award and two Korean students also received awards in atmospheric and astronomical fields.
The topic of the Olympiad this year was "Earth Science Renaissance: science, environment and art."
Next year’s event will be held in Japan, and India will hold the 7th IESO.
