New App makes walking in the footsteps of Madiba even more accessible
The “Madiba-inspired tourist attractions” map, developed last year by South African Tourism in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, has been developed into a mobile phone App to further enhance visitors’ experiences.
Tourists and South Africans seeking out sites and attractions associated with the late South African President and global icon, Nelson Mandela, will now have all the information they need at their fingertips thanks to a new mobile phone App developed by South African Tourism in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation. This is in commemoration of the 25thanniversaryoftheformerPresident’sreleasefromprison.
The App is based on the “Madiba-inspired tourist attractions” map launched in 2014 to encourage tourists from around the world and South Africa to travel the country, and walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela. It features tourist sites as well as general places of interest in the four main provinces that defined Mandela’s life. These range from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Robben Island, off the coast of Cape Town, where he was imprisoned, to Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where he is laid to rest.
“This App is inspired by a true South African Icon, and users now have the ability to find, experience and share some of the best attractions, places of interests and unique content we have ever been able to put together as part of this “Madiba-Inspired tourist attractions” offering. As we remember the historic year of Madiba’s release from prison, we would like to encourage everyone to use the App to discover some of the stories behind the legend.
This is an exciting new layer to the map which has already proved to be hugely popular with the international and domestic travel trade. This App makes “walking in the footsteps of Madiba” much easier than before and greatly enriches visitors’ experiences of the attractions associated with one of the greatest men of our time, Nelson Mandela,” says Minister of Tourism in South Africa, Derek Hanekom
Minister DerekHanekom launched the new App today at Liliesleaf in Rivonia, one of the places featured on the “Madiba-inspired tourist attractions ”map.
Liliesleaf is also a place which was once the nerve centre of the liberation movement and a place of refuge for its leaders including former President NelsonMandela. Guests were invited to tes tout the App’s offering for themselves.
The GPS-enabled App uses location based services to establish which attraction the user is visiting and provides real-time information to enrich their experience. This includes written information on the attraction, audio describing the attraction and other relevant information including contact details, map previews and photo galleries.
The App also gives users their proximity from other “Madiba-inspired tourist attractions” and includes an itinerary builder, helping to make it as easy as possible for those wanting to visit numerous attractions to best plan their route. It also makes it simple for visitors to share their experience on social media and features a rewards system linked to visitors’ social media activity. The rewards system will also encourage visitors to visit more than one Madiba site.
The App is now available for download in English from the Apple iTunes store (iOS devices) and the Google Play store (Android devices). It will soon be available in other languages including: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Mandarin and Portuguese.

남아공의 전 대통령이자 세계의 아이콘이셨던 만델라와 관련된 장소를 찾고자 하는 관광객들과 남아공 국민들은 남아공관광청이 넬슨만델라재단과 협력하여 개발한 새로운 휴대전화앱 덕분에 필요한 정보를 즉시 이용할 수 있습니다. 올해는 만델라 전대통령이 감옥에서 석방된지 25주년되는 해입니다.
이 앱은 2014년 출시된 ‘만델라 관련 관광지’지도를 기반으로 개발되어 전세계 관광객들과 남아공 사람들이 남아공을 여행하면서 만델라의 발자취를 따라 걷게 하는 것입니다. 이 앱은 관광지 뿐만 아니라 만델라의 삶이 결정되었던 4개주에 있는 일반적인 흥미로운 장소들도 보여줍니다. 그 장소는 유네스코 세계문화유산 보호구역부터, 만델라가 수감되었던 케이프타운 앞바다에 위치한 로빈섬, 그가 영원히 잠든 이스턴케이프의 쿠누까지 포함합니다.

이것은 이미 전세계에서나 국내 여행업계에서 인기가 아주 많은 지도에 흥미로운 새로운 점을 첨가한 것입니다. 데렉 하네콤 남아공 관광부 장관은 “이 앱으로 마디바의 발자취를 따라 걷기가 이전보다 더 쉬워졌으며 우리시대의 위대한 인물인 넬슨만델라와 연관된 장소에 대한 관광객의 경험을 더욱 풍부하게 해줍니다.” 라고 말했습니다.
데렉 하네콤 장관은 ‘만델라 관련 관광지’ 지도에 나온 장소중 하나인 리보니아에 있는 릴리스리프에서 오늘 새로운 앱을 출시했습니다. 릴리스리프는 또한 자유화 운동의 본부였으며 만델라를 포함한 남아공 지도자들이 피신했던 장소입니다. 이 앱의 기능을 활용해 보시기 바랍니다.
GPS가 작동되는 이 앱은 위치기반 서비스를 사용해서 사용자가 어떤 관광지를 방문하는지를 파악하고 그들의 경험을 풍부하게 하기 위해서 실시간 정보를 제공합니다. 여기에는 관광지에 대한 설명를 읽거나 들을 수 있고 그 관광지와 관련된 정보 (연락처, 지도, 사진갤러리)등도 포함되어 있습니다.
이 앱은 또한 사용자들에게 다른 ‘만델라 관련 관광지’에 대한 친밀감을 주고 여정 만들기를 포함, 일정에 맞게 많은 관광지를 방문하고자 하는 사람들의 방문을 가능하게 합니다. 방문자가 SNS를 통해서 그들의 경험을 나누는 것이 보다 간단해졌고 방문자의 SNS 활동에 대한 보상제도도 마련했습니다. 이 보상제도로 인해서 만델라와 관련된 장소를 한 곳 이상 방문하게 합니다.
이 앱은 애플 iTunes Store (iOS 운영체계), 구글 Play Store(Android 운영체계)에서 영어로 다운로드 할 수 있습니다. 이 앱은 네덜란드어, 프랑스어, 독일어, 이태리어, 중국어, 포르투칼어로도 곧 개발될 예정입니다.
