Sensational K-pop girl group BLACKPINK has signed a contract with Interscope Records, a major music label under Universal Music Group, to tap into the U.S. pop market, the band’s Korean management agency said Tuesday.
Interscope has published music of such high-profile American artists as Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Maroon 5 and Lady Gaga.
YG Entertainment said that Universal Music CEO Lucian Grainge announced the signing of the contract to group executives during the American music group’s global leadership meeting on Oct. 10.
YG also quoted Grainge as saying, “We are pleased to build a new relationship with BLACKPINK through YG. We expect BLACKPINK’s surprising success on the basis of Universal Music Group’s resources and expert knowledge.”
The CEO also reportedly put promoting BLACKPINK as the group’s top priority project.
YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk said: “(YG) will make its upmost efforts for BLACKPINK’s successful activities (in the U.S.) in close cooperation with Universal. I also hope the BLACKPINK case could be an important opportunity for other YG artists to make inroads into the North American and European markets.”
On Tuesday, Universal also announced the signing of BLACKPINK on its Twitter account, saying, “K-Pop superstars #BLACKPINK sign to Universal Music Group x @Interscope!”
