(Media1=Sara Grant) It has been the issue within world hotel industry to keep sustainable practices which help protect the environment and create a greener world for all from the beginning of 21st Century.

JW Marriott Hotel Macau and The Ritz-Carlton, Macau have implemented a plan to remove disposable plastic straws and plastic stirrers from the properties. Globally, Marriott International has implemented an initiative to remove plastic straws from over 6,500 properties by July 2019.

Mr. Rauf Malik, Vice President of Operations at JW Marriott Hotel Macau and The Ritz-Carlton, Macau, said, “We are proud to follow Marriott International’s worldwide initiative to remove plastic straws and implement it in our properties in Macau to support the environment. This is a powerful step in changing how we think about single-use plastics. Eliminating plastic straws and stirrers is a straight forward yet truly powerful way to protect the future of our world. By removing all disposable plastic straws and stirrers, we actively help reducing plastic pollution and further stand in solidarity with our guests.”

The plastic straw initiative is the latest movement from Marriott International to enhance the sustainability of its operations and reduce plastic consumption. In 2016, JW Marriott Hotel Macau and The Ritz-Carlton, Macau received the Silver Award at the annual Macao Green Hotel Awards, organized by the Environmental Health Bureau (DSPA). The awards seek to acknowledge and reward hotels throughout Macau on their green initiatives and environmental management.

In addition, JW Marriott Hotel Macau has partnered with Nespresso Coffee to motivate staff to recycle via a Nespresso coffee capsule challenge. Each guest room is equipped with a Nespresso Pixie machine, and housekeeping associates collect the used capsules and recycle them into designated boxes throughout the week. At the end of each month, a special prize is awarded to the floor which recycles the most amount of coffee capsules. Once processed, the remaining coffee granules are sent to an organic farm in Hong Kong to be utilized as a plant fertilizer whilst the aluminum pods are sent to an aluminum recycling plant.

Mr. Malik commented, “Across a number of social and environmental initiatives, we are proud to demonstrate our strong commitment to ensuring environmental responsibility remains a top priority. Supporting the elimination of plastic straws continues as part of our long-term strategy as an environmentally conscious hospitality company in Macau.”
